Opening evening for an exhibition on Mies van der Rohe's Detroit-based urban renewal project, which runs through July 29, 9:00 a.m. Opening Party, lecture by Noah Resnick - Mies van der Rohe's Lafayette Park: The Settlement Shape, at Crown Hall, IIT, Chicago, June 7, 2012- 5:00 p.m.,Monday through Friday.

Detroit’s Lafayette Park was the first urban renewal project in the United States and remains a model of efficient, community-minded living. It was designed for car owners, but parking spaces are discreet. It was built across the street from an elementary school, but children don’t need to cross the street to get there.

Mies’ inventive living space was the product of a collaboration with Alfred Caldwell, landscape designer and longtime Mies collaborator, and Ludwig Hilberseimer, who handled the urban design. The result is a space-effective and cost-effective dwelling designed to keep the middle class in the city in the 1960s. People live in Lafayette Park today to enjoy its elegant views, layouts, and amenities.

At 6:00 p.m., Noah Resnick (ARCH '00), associate professor of architecture at University of Detroit Mercy and resident of Lafayette Park, will lecture on A Bustle in the Hedgerow—Urban Living in the Prairie Landscape.

He is currently working on launching two new hotel brands in various 24 hour gateway cities around the world.

PUBLIC Chicago is the first of these new brands. Bringing BIM and IPD into Your Practice

5:30 - 7:00 p.m., - AIA Chicago, 35 East Wacker, #250
Sponsor: AIA Chicago Practice Management KC
Learning units: 1.5 LU
Free event for members; $15.00 non-members

Integrated project delivery, the open sharing of ideas from the start between team members who will design and construct a project, is the only way to exploit the power of building information modeling. Changing our industry's competitive behavior is very difficult but necessary. Learning to work effectively in BIM and IPD involves unlearning past ways of working that are at once familiar and comfortable—but detrimental to your work, progress, and ultimately your indispensability. We all say that we cooperate, but what does it mean to truly collaborate?

Randy Deutsch, AIA, LEED AP (Deutsch Insights, Inc.), author of BIM and Integrated Design: Strategies for Architectural Practice (2011), will discuss the people side of the change equation. He will explain the most common barriers to collaboration; why teams make better decisions than individuals; how we’re preparing for technology but not for collaboration; and how – working in BIM and IPD – we can collaborate and integrate to transform ourselves, our teams, organizations and profession into leadership roles and learn how to get owners to move toward IPD.

Randy will close with a large-scaled, highly complex case study BIM project that stretches the architect’s role in the process, ultimately leading to increased leadership opportunities and project scope.

Internal Air Pressures in High Rise Buildings: Understanding of Mechanisms, Impact, Mitigation and Opportunities

8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., - Harris Bank Building, 115 South LaSalle Street, 3rd floor auditorium
Sponsor: AIA Chicago, Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings
Learning units: 3.5 LU/HSW/SD
$100.00 members, $125.00 non-members

The impact and continually changing interaction of air pressure within buildings and on building systems is complex; and when not properly managed, can create significant problems. For example, the continual increases in energy efficiency in recent years has resulted in tighter buildings, which can provide many benefits, but sometimes creates unanticipated consequences due in part to building pressures. The art and science of successfully managing building pressures is the confluence of many disciplines and building systems; including natural and mechanical ventilation; exterior envelope design and performance; fire and life safety; elevator operations in both normal and emergency modes; design of stairwell, shaft and elevator enclosures; and sustainability.

We will examine the dynamics of building air pressures within buildings. Although the focus will be on high-rise buildings (which is where the impact of building pressures approach extremes, including but not limited to stack effect and reverse stack effect), much of what will be reviewed is also applicable in varying degrees to mid-rise and low-rise buildings.

The International Energy Conservation Code is currently the State of Illinois energy code for residential and commercial construction. Join us for an overview of the changes and a discussion on what these mean to building professionals. This information is particularly important for building professionals in Illinois, as the State will be adopting the 2012 IECC as law in July.

Sarah Bader, RID, EDAC (principal, Gensler); Carol Simpson, AIA (project manager, Northwestern Memorial Hospital); and Mark Bussey (senior superintendant, Skender Construction)will describe the challenges Northwestern Memorial Hospital faced in updating its ten-year-old bed tower to reflect a new patient care model.

Included in the project goals were: (1) establishing a standardized finish selection to better align interiors to brand and level capital expenditures over a twenty-year improvement cycle; and (2) creating a clear method of conveying this information so that all architectural firms employed by NMH will follow the new standards. Three million square feet were evaluated based on criteria established by contributors across patient, clinical, facilities and staff communities.
