6:00 - 8:00 p.m., - Polish Triangle - Division, Ashland and Milwaukee
Sponsors: Guild Literary Concept, Polish Triangle Coalition, Soiled Magazine, Studio/Gang Architects
Free event

The first of a series of three readings in Applied Words: on Architecture and the Urban Plan, where the Guild Literary Complex invites writers to examine our relationships with the built environment. Broken Windows: Writers Examine the Human Element in Urban Design, at the Polish Triangle, Chicago, July 9, 2013The free event will include an open mic (sign-up begins at 5:30 p.m.), and stories from Paul Durica, Maribel Mares and Sarah Ross.

The “broken windows” social theory states that community ailments such as trash, graffiti, and loitering, when left unchecked, invite larger criminal problems. But if the “broken windows” are fixed, a community invites economic development and social prosperity. In practice, the concept can evolve into zero tolerance for behavior or people considered disruptive or unwanted. Our readers will present stories from the middle, tales that examine conflict and offer surprise as they foreground the human element in urban design.

The Applied Words series explores creative writings intersection with other fields. Ranging in discipline from art and architecture to social history and biology, Applied Words attempts to use the literary arts to enhance and/or creatively describe other fields.

Open House at Bruce Goff's Ford House

3:00 - 6:00 p.m., - Ford House, 404 South Edgelawn Drive, Aurora
Sponsor: Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy
$20.00 members, $35.00 for non-members. Non-members joining at $50.00 friend level will receive complimentary registration.

Bruce Goff’s work often defies definition and his Ford House is a prime example of a building without precedent: Quonset hut ribs, marbles, rope and a 70-foot wall of coal combine to create three soaring circular spaces. Join the Conservancy on Saturday, July 13 for a tour at this unique Open House at Bruce Goff's Ford House, Aurora, Illinois, July 13, 2013house and watch as the sun shines through, making the interior sparkle. Sidney Robinson, longtime owner and professor emeritus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and University of Illinois at Chicago, will be present to talk about the house and answer questions. Light food and refreshments for the afternoon will be provided.

Bruce Goff designed the Ford house in Aurora in the late 1940s for Ruth and Sam Ford, a watercolor painter and a gas utilities engineer. Having recently returned from the engineering corps of the Navy, Goff incorporated materials that referenced nautical images, using rope nailed to the ceilings, lapped cypress boards and green glass chunks that gave an underwater green glow to the interior. He also used steel Quonset hut ribs as the structure and a 70-foot wall of coal. The unusual materials with their strong colors and varied textures are disciplined by the rigor of the circular geometry.

Although it is not included in the Ford House Tour, the Conservancy has arranged for group-rate tickets ($10) at Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House, located nearby in Plano, Illinois. To make your own arrangements, please call the Farnsworth House (630/552.0052).

A Green Transformation: Turning a Conventional Condo Design into a LEED Gold Apartment Tower

5:30 - 7:30 p.m., - Parc Huron, 469 West Huron
Sponsor: United States Green Building CouncilA Green Transformation: Turning A Conventional Condo design into a LEED Gold Apartment Tower, Chicago, July 18, 2013
$15.00 for members, $30.00 non-members

Presenters: Megan Zack (Project Architect, Director of Sustainability, Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture), Sachin Anand (Principal, dbHMS), Paul Marucci (Vice President of Development, M&R Development, L.L.C.)

As the first LEED Gold certified, new construction, high-rise apartment building in Illinois, Parc Huron is setting the standard for luxury green apartment living. Originally conceived as a standard condominium building, the design already held building permits from the City of Chicago when the condo market crashed. The site was acquired by a new owner, which wanted to proceed with the project except for two significant changes: the building was to function as an upscale apartment building rather than with condos, and Parc Huron was to be certified with LEED Silver at a minimum. Moreover, a fast-track schedule had to be followed to achieve the owner's occupancy goal, with construction beginning as soon as the permit was issued.

This program will explain the key design changes and the intense collaboration of the owner and project team that were required to exceed the project goals and achieve LEED Gold. A building tour will allow participants to experience and interacting with the elements of the design that were altered, including the building envelope, the mechanical system and the green spaces.

Learn all about AIA Fellowship from F. Christopher Lee, FAIA, principal of Johnson & Lee, Ltd., during this annual “Demystifying Fellowship” program. The AIA College of Fellows was developed to elevate those architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Election to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of the architect as an individual, but also honors before the public and the profession a model architect who has made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level.

The presentation will explain the nomination, application, and review process. All members are welcome to attend, regardless of eligibility status, and learn how to navigate the road to this achievement.

Good Houses and Good Books: The English Arts and Crafts Movement in America

6:00 p.m., - Pritzker Auditorium, Monroe Building, 104 South MichiganGood Houses and Good Books: The English Arts and Crafts Movement America, Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust lecture by Anne Mallek at the Monroe Building, Chicago, July 25, 2013
Sponsor: Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust
Free event. Space limited.

Lecture by Anne Mallek, Curator of the Gamble House, Pasadena, California.

Towards the end of his life, William Morris proclaimed that “good houses and good books” were “the pleasurable end towards which all societies of human beings ought now to struggle.” About this same time, the English Arts & Crafts movement began to find a sympathetic audience in America, primarily through the exchange of design literature and the American quest for a native style and architecture. Frank Lloyd Wright was at the heart of this exchange, especially in the early decades of his career, from his relationship with Morris-successor Charles Robert Ashbee to his own search for the “House Beautiful.” Ultimately, Wright outdistanced the movement as his architecture evolved beyond this early cross-pollination, achieving a style both distinctly his own and distinctively American.
